What makes a YKMI clinical elective different

Not simply where learning takes place, but how it is designed: integrated teams, supervised practice and reciprocal learning across nine disciplines.

The cornerstone of YKMI is the delivery of community-based international clinical elective programmes for healthcare students and professionals from around the world.

We provide structured placements across nine disciplines:

  • Dentistry
  • Medicine
  • Nursing
  • Pharmacy
  • Public Health
  • Physiotherapy
  • Laboratory Sciences
  • Nutrition
  • Allied Health

Participants learn alongside Ugandan healthcare professionals, university students, and community health teams within hospitals, health centres, schools, mobile outreach clinics, and rural communities.

Our objective is not simply to host participants. Our objective is to prepare future healthcare leaders.

Designed, not simply arranged

What distinguishes YKMI is not simply where learning takes place, but how it is designed. We have developed a collaborative learning model where international participants work alongside Ugandan healthcare professionals and students as members of integrated healthcare teams.

Rather than observing healthcare from the sidelines, participants become active learners within professionally supervised environments where clinical practice, community engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration occur simultaneously.

Reciprocal learning

This approach creates reciprocal learning. International participants gain invaluable exposure to diverse healthcare settings while Ugandan students benefit from international collaboration, shared knowledge, and professional exchange. Communities remain central throughout the process, not as training sites, but as respected partners whose knowledge, resilience, and lived experience enrich healthcare education.

What participants develop

  • Clinical competence
  • Leadership
  • Teamwork
  • Intercultural communication
  • Ethical decision-making
  • A deeper understanding of global health
